With so many makeup setting sprays on the market which one do you go for? Today I’m sharing my top picks from the top brands that are worth spending your money on! Before we get started, I need to point out that these are setting sprays, as in sprays that lock your makeup in place and keep it full proof. They are not hydrating mists which can also assist with makeup setting and blending etc, these are purely makeup locking in sprays and I’m bringing out the big guns!
So let’s get into it… here they are in no particular order -because every one of these is my favourite- for different looks and different reasons. I keep all of these on hand and switch them up depending on my mood and what look I’m going for. Obviously you don’t need all five of them (or maybe you do), but hey, when you get to play with makeup as part of your job, five really ain’t that much.
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
This baby will be available in South Africa in June 2016 and let me tell you gals, it is the bees-knees! When I tried this one on my skin, from the very first time, I was in LOVE and the love affair is still going strong!
Without dragging my makeup or smudging my liner, it kept my makeup looking pretty darn amazing all day long! It dries up in no time and it’s easy to apply layers of this beautiful mist. On my skin it felt great, making it comfortable and easy to wear as a day time makeup setting spray and it works beautifully as a night setting spray too. That nasty T-Zone shine I have going on was reduced quite a bit, and I’m happy to report that there was no makeup meltdown the whole day long. A winner in every way.
To apply, hold it about 10 inches from your perfectly made up face and spritz the mist 2-4 times going in an X and T formation. I like to use between 2-3 sprays.
Where to get it: Urban Decay Counter (which will open at Sandton City next month yay)
Price: R450 for 120ml (I have the travel size in my pic which is 30ml)
Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal
The first time I discovered Skindinavia was actually when I used Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, since UD’s version is created by the same company. But I had heard about Skindinavia a thousand times over from all the Youtube Guru’s that rave about Skindinavia Setting Sprays. Ok, so lets talk about this one in particular; Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal as it’s different to their standard setting spray (The Makeup Finishing Spray) and Urban Decay All Nighter. It’s dubbed kiss-proof, cry-proof and sweat-proof by the brand. It reduces shine, but still gives your skin that amazing glow. If you’re looking for a setting spray to lock your foundation in, but still want to maintain that dewy perfection, The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal is your best bet!
The application is exactly the same as Urban Decay, with the same X and T formation sprayed onto your made up face 2-4 times.
I personally love glowing skin but avoid it all costs because it leaves me looking like a greased monkey rather than a glowing all star. With this setting spray however, I can recreate that fabulous glow and it looks natural and beautiful.
Available from Skindinavia.co.za
– The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal R558 for 118ml and R699 for 336m
– The Makeup Finishing Spray Oil Control, prices as above and also comes in a 20ml for R210
Bodyography Ready, Set Go Makeup Setting Spray
This a new product under the Bodyography umbrella which launched in South Africa this May. It sets your makeup quickly and dries down nicely for a flawless face. I do like to fan it down between sprays (recommended is 1-3 times but I go for 2-3) because the mist is a little more “wet” than UD and Skindinavia, but once it sets, hello flawless face.
The formula is weightless and controls shine like a dream. It smells beautiful with aromatic Ylang Ylang essential oils, that also help to reduce stress and anxiety. Yassss!
This is a great product to use on a day to day basis especially when you want your makeup to look like flawless skin without any slippage or makeup meltdown.
Price:R340 for 177ml
Kryolan Ultra Setting Spray
Is a fantastic option if you want your makeup to stay practically bullet proof! The only draw back is that it may feel a little drying on the skin and therefore, I don’t like using it for every day! If you’re not fussed about feeling dry, then you might love it for every day, but it is definitely a handy spray to have on hand.
It’s a professional, movie ready setting spray, used by makeup artists who work on film sets around the world. I would reach for this one if I’m going to be out all night and can’t be fussed about powdering my nose (or if I know I wont have time to worry about my makeup). It also keeps you entire foundation waterproof, when used with Kyrolan’s foundation and their powder that have been set with the Ultra Setting Spray.
Even though it leaves my brows feeling a tad crunchy, the mirror tells a tale of a beautiful face! It’s best used after setting your cream/ liquid foundation with powder and since it has an alcohol content, I’d wait to apply mascara and eyeliner after you’ve set your foundation with the spray.
Price: R239.00 for 50ml
Available from Kyrolan Stockists Nationwide. I bought mine from the Centurion branch
