Jacarandas in Cullinan

!!! This entry is older than two years. The information may be outdated. >>>

Going to see the Jacarandas in full bloom in Cullinan has been something I’ve wanted to do for ages. Last year, we attempted to go and see them, but I think we might have been a bit too late as they had already finished blooming in November. This year though, I wasn’t about to let them get away from me.

As soon as the first rains (or rather drizzles) of the Spring started, I thought we might be luckier this time around. So this weekend, we headed out to the quaint little town of Cullinan in the hopes of seeing the beautiful purple blooms lining the streets.

While there was certainly a beautiful cloud of heavenly purple arching over Oak Street, a lot of the blooms had already fallen off the trees. Blame the lack of rain, or my bad timing, I don’t know, but I was glad to see it, even if it wasn’t in all of its purple glory!

You’ll understand what I mean by all of its glory when you see this post, which ranks Cullinan 8th in 15 of the World’s Most Magical Streets Shaded By Flowers And Trees.

Besides going to Cullinan to see the Jacarandas in the Spring, it’s a great little place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon and it’s only about 30ish, kilometres outside of Pretoria.

We had the most delicious burgers and craft beer at The Cockpit Brewhouse. We went on a Sunday and they had a live singer which added to the whole cool vibe of this packed spot.

What to do in Cullinan…

  • Check out The Cullinan Diamond Mine where you can learn more about the history of what was formally known as Premier Mine. It was here where the worlds biggest, uncut diamond ever, was found in 1905. You may have heard of it… The Cullinan Diamond, which is a mere 3,106.75 carats!
  • Stroll through the quaint Victorian style town and browse the many cute little shops that line the infamous Oak Street.
  • Enjoy an early morning breakfast or lunch in one of the many restaurants.

Where to Shop…

  • The Trading Post has a collection of beautiful art, sculptures and jewellery that’s unique and will certainly catch your eye!
  • Rust in White is a super cool place to explore if you’re into antiques and shabby chic little trinkets. The main shop has a bunch of unique rooms and sells pretty little things for your home, and the outside section has a bunch of really cool, old, mostly rusty antiques that are interesting to explore.

Where to Eat…

  • The Cockpit Brewhouse is an aviation-style burger joint that serves delicious burgers (among other things) and yummy hand crafted beer.
  • Whispering Oaks is a cute and colourful garden cafe surrounded by beautiful, lush roses. Check out their pancakes, they are delicious as is their coffee!
  • As Greek As It Gets is always jam packed, so make sure you book or get their early! Go there for their delicious, authentic meze menu and enjoy a true Greek-style dining experience.
