Love your hair with La Brasiliana – Review

Oh la la, I love my La-Brasiliana hair! La-Brasiliana is an intensive keratin treatment that transforms the hair. The result; smoother, shinier, more manageable hair.

Now you girls know that nothing beats a good a hair day, so when given the opportunity to have one, every day for the next couple of months who could resist?

Last week Thursday I went to the lovely Scissors salon in Durban to test drive the La-Brasiliana hair treatment. It’s a fabulous treatment that takes your hair from drab to fab in the salon chair. And when used in conjunction with the correct home care range, can let you keep your great hair for up to three months.

What is it

La-Brasiliana is an in-salon Brazilian keratin treatment. It tames your mane and although it can’t transform your hair from curly to straight, it helps it along the way. By coating each strand of hair in keratin and using a preservative to lock it in, you can enjoy sleeker, sexier, more manageable hair. For those of you with curls, styling them straight is a breeze after La-Brasiliana.

I kid you not, it took me literally 10 minutes to dry my hair this morning with the hair dryer and I didn’t even need to ghd the fizz out. Now, bear with me my hair is straight naturally, so if you’ve got more hair and a different texture it might not be that short, but the La-Brasiliana treatment promises that your styling time will be drastically cut down.

I do love how my hair shines and each strand is sleek and soft. It looks so healthy and vibrant.

Can anyone have it done

Yup! Indeedio! La-Brasiliana is suitable for long, short, straight, curly, coloured, permed, relaxed, straightened, highlighted (whew!) and bleached hair.

How it works

Depending on your hair length and thickness a treatment can take anything from 1 to 4 hours. First your hair is washed with La-Brasiliana MENO, a clarifying shampoo and rinsed off without any conditioner. Then your hair is combed through and the La-Brasiliana treatment is applied to damp hair and worked into each strand. Hair is dried using a blow dryer and straightened with a 450 degree flat iron.

The iron is much hotter than your every day ghd, and helps to lock in the moisture, giving you that glossy, gorgeous hair. Now, bear in mind that a preservative is used to keep the keratin locked into the hair, so if you go home and wash it with your regular shampoo and conditioner, over time you’ll probably end up washing the treatment right off. Regular shampoos and conditioners and even those salon quality ones contain sodium which strips down the preservative that locks in the keratin. It is therefore important to at least use the La-Brasiliana shampoo and conditioner as part of your after care.

My Experience

I loved the fact that it took only 1 hour to complete. I have fairly long hair so generally spend ages in a salon. My stylist, Sabira said it would probably cost around R750 for my hair. Not bad – that’s what I usually pay for a cut and a few foils!

I was told not to tie up or clip my hair, or even tuck it behind my ears for one full day after the treatment. It wasn’t too bad. If you’ve got thicker hair you might have to go for the 4 day treatment, which means you won’t be able to clip or tie your hair for 4 days. But, your hair looks and feels fab, so you don’t feel like it needs a wash in any case.

What about Formaldehyde?

Ahh the big controversy! Although there are many “Brazilian” treatments on the market, they are very different from one another and it’s important to read the fine print before you book yourself in for one!

So how much Formaldehyde is in La Brasiliana? La Brasiliana says “there are 2 measurements used: content in finished goods of the formalin / aldehydes, and the formaldehyde gas emitted into the air.  The greatest exposure risk is to the hair dresser, the customer will be in contact with the fumes for a short time.”

They also say that  “La Brasiliana professional solutions have by far, the least gas emission vs its competitors, less than the regulated Threshold Limit Value of 0.03ppm (parts per million).  The majority of stylists working with La Brasiliana, feel that no mask is necessary.”

I spoke to Sabira about her concerns on this and she said that they try not to book too many Brazilian treatments in one day, and usually do a max of 2 a day so that the amount of Formaldehyde gas is minimal. Also, before even blow drying my hair, they opened every single window in the salon, as ventilation is key.

If you’re sick of dealing with unmanageable hair, then this treatment is a must!
